Test Drive The First

Our first, pre-game test drive! Feel free to backtag into this to your heart’s content. You may also (with permission from other players) have this be canon to your character’s RP if you wish; you can also tag without concerns of continuity too! Related to this, your Anima companion, spells, elements, etc, can/will change around from the test drive and game-proper.

Be sure to include a starter in your response, so people have something to build off of and tag into; try and tag around different threads too, as players may want to use these threads for RP samples!

1. Monster Hunting
Worried murmurs trace through the settlement of Scholar’s Rest. And the reason is due to rumors of a Bulette spotted nearby, close enough that the land shark poses a town devouring threat. You’ve been asked to scout out, and warned repeatedly not to engage without proper backup. Maybe that’s why the Chivalrous Guild has insisted you take at least one companion along with you. The magic you both carry, and your Anima, will hopefully see you through.
2. Filling In The Blanks
A branch from the Diplomats Guild has approached you with a map. A patch work, incomplete map, but still a map. It illustrates a passage along the Salt Step Range, and several empty points are circled. The Diplomats want you to journey there, fill out the map, and return the completed document. Just watch for shifting passages, rock crumbling, and pack a good meal; you may be out for a bit.
3. Shrine Tending
Ripple is a half sunken ruin, and some of these ruins carry old carvings suggesting shrines. Many of them are covered in marine plants, obscuring images of a sea serpent and various minor gods. The Devout hope to clear some of these carvings and unearth new shrines, and thus receive the blessings of the gods depicted in them. The one complication is in the amount of swimming and potential attention of marine life to reach these shrines in the first place, or needing to crawl down through crumbing passages. But with luck, you and the others they’ve brought along don’t mind getting your feet wet.
4. Searching For Ingredients
The Discoverer’s Guild is running short on items for their alchemy, and one potion in high demand is a brew that strengthens one’s immune system. One of the key ingredients is fruit from the forest around Sun Rise, and an expedition ship has been sent out and anchored near the shore. And with a storm growling in, time is running short, and you may need to brave a blazing forest to find the ingredients.
5. Training Wheels
It’s not an easy task, finding yourself bonded to a new creature and finding your feet in a strange place; there’s any number of growing pains for the two of you. That sometimes means bursts of wild magic, and an Anima creature ready to experiment and test its limits. Maybe your creature is curious, destructive, craving attention, or ready to run off and do whatever it wants. Good thing Haven is big enough for this much chaos… but you might need some help with managing a new Anima.

Down he goes off of the tree's branches and back onto the earth below, crouching down upon landing. His own descent lacks ninja skills and, as such, leads to more noise created than his partner. A hand rests over the pouch containing his own egg, which shook now and again, but offered little else. Noah ponders if the little guy was readying up for the mission, perhaps even joining the ninja in egging the creature on.

Perhaps it's punishment for the awful pun, but almost immediately after landing does the alchemist note his partner's strange, yet undeniably empowering dance. Foreign as it is to him, raised eyebrows are the only response he gives to such a maneuver. Something about it fills him with a sense of bravado, as if such choreography could only be performed by the manliest of men...

Reason soon returns to take note of Yuki'to's stomping and the ulterior motive behind the odd dance. In noting this, Noah follows suit, stomping the ground and whistling loudly to draw attention to the two of them. Out here, it was safe enough for such a battle to occur. Few casualties, aside from maybe a few trees.

Only after a moment of their audio taunting do their efforts yield fruit, with a notable tremble of the earth beneath their feet, one that steadily grows in magnitude as their target approaches. A telltale fin pokes out of the ground, careening towards the pair at an intimidating speed. Noah clenches the vial in his hand, waiting for the creature to surface. His eyes narrow ahead as he waits for the moment to strike...

He was inwardly relieved he wasn't looking completely strange, the man joining in and adding more sound and vibration to the mix. There was no way this thing could ignore the... the...

He stopped when he felt it from the bottom of his feet and into his ankles. Uh oh. His fingers readjusted and readied the kunai as he sprung into action, muscles coiled and ready to spring as the fin rose from the earth. The miqo'te took a few steps back, the footfalls gentle.

They only had one shot at this if they wanted to make this quick and clean. Noah, you're up.

Thankfully, there are alternative options in case Noah misses. None of them are very preferable, but that's why they're not the main plan. A hand protectively rests over his egg as the beast approaches, the tremors of its movements as intimidating as any roar it could provide. Only when the bulette is close does it pop its head out, lunging towards with its mouth agape, ready to strike.

"Now!"

With this brief window of opportunity, he chucks the vial at the incoming creature, having no choice but to immediately roll and tumble to the side to avoid its rows of teeth. There's a graceless slam against the tree, the bulette leaving a noticeable impression as it quickly gets back onto its feet, shaking its head vigorously. A black tar-like substance covers its eyes, which the creature tries and fails to remove. Its movements become more sporadic between biting at the air and brushing its head against the tree to rid itself of the alchemic solution.

Your turn, Yuki'to.

Blinded, but for how long? With his body low, Yuki'to rushed in and took the time to study the body. Back of the head... that was a very small spot, but he hadn't been training for years just to get sloppy over a small and precise target.

Grunts of exertion were exchanged for silence as he kicked off the ground, landing in a crouch at the bulette's back. His tail whipped for balance as the creature thrashed, and he waited for the jaws to close, lifting that back crest.

There.

His eyes sharpened and his expression tightened as a pair of keen kunai were twisted underhand, and just as he'd always done to finish off opponents both big and small, he thrust them into leathery flesh until his palms hit dusty hide.

In his experience, things like this never last as long as he wants to. It's enough for the ninja to score a clean hit on the creature, forcing it to rear back and roar out from the staggering pain of the blow. It thrashes wildly, trying to shake off the miqo'te and refusing to end the fight so quickly.

Noah isn't letting him handle the creature alone, of course. He only backs away for a moment to ready his knife, coating the blade in a blue solution that wraps an cool blue aura. The alchemist lunges forward to plunge the blade into an eye, but with the bulette's thrashing, he's just off the mark to scrape against its hardened shell. The coating seems to slow its movements slightly as it breaks away the only way it knows how: submerging underground and trying to trip up the two men with its protruding fin.

Yuki'to thankfully isn't dragged along for the ride, as the creature's more concerned with putting some distance between itself and its attackers. The fin forces Noah to stumble onto the ground, but he's back on his feet quickly, the dagger in one hand and a vial in another. He passes the latter over to the ninja, filled with a similar blue liquid he used himself, while the shark starts curving around to try and attack with its fin once again.

"Use this."

He found himself in a pinwheel, quickly backstepping along the back plates of the creature as it retreats. His tail visibly frizzed, but he managed to get back on solid ground alright.

That just left an important question: Now what? With Hydaelyn so far away somehow, the Echo was of no use to him to warn him of danger.

His attention caught, and he gave the vial a quick inspection. Used to poisons that he'd apply to his own blades, and seeing what it could do, the ninja saw no reason to doubt it. He gave it a quick application, and gave his knives a whirl before he was back in position.

He crouched, then darted to meet the creature head-on.

The bulette is wounded, so they're part of the way there. Fortunately, it seems intent on finishing the job rather than fleeing and licking its wounds. This does mean the creature whips around to try and dash past them once again. This time, Noah's better able to avoid getting tripped up and slashing at the fin as it passes him.

The attack throws off its sense of direction slightly, but refocusing itself to make a direct attack towards Yuki'to. Just as the ninja sunk his blades deep into the creature, it pops out of the ground, mouth agape to return the favor with its teeth.

Here it comes...! Yuki'to blew out a breath and thought on the fact that he'd faced bigger, meaner things than this. Pushing all other thought out of his mind, he moved quickly.

Ten. Chi. He opened the channels and thrust out his hands, sending a Raiton bolt of lightning for it to eat instead of him.

For as agile as the bulette is underground, it all vanishes when it's above ground, especially when leaping through the air. It has no choice but to eat that lightning bolt and tumble gracelessly to the ground, flopping in place as it's knocked prone.

Noah isn't convinced this will be enough to finish the creature, but it is a solid opportunity to debilitate it further. "Hold your breath!" He commands, readying another vial, this time tossed directly into its mouth. The shark's breath wasn't any good to start with, but with the noxious fumes of the concoction, it's bad enough that even the alchemist needs to step back. Though it isn't poisonous, the fumes start to slow the land shark's movement, becoming more wobbly and unfocused.

He had planned to save this one for if they needed to make an emergency exit, but it seems to work well enough in preventing the bulette from making one.

He sucked in a breath and held. Being poisoned once was once too many. He heard the crunch of broken glass as another vial was spent, and he was inwardly glad he didn't doubt the man as the toxins began to take hold.

A switch flipped on in him, a very familiar feeling. This battle had gone on long enough, and it was time to put this bulette to rest for the sake of these poor people.

His eyes were steely yet unfocused. He widened his stance and threw open every channel as his hand began to form the first few signs. Jin. Jin. Chi. Ten. Jin. Ten... Then his hands began moving faster and faster, pushing out all other thought. Jin, ten, ten, chi, ten-chi, ten-jin-jin tentenchijinjintenchitenchijinjin-

Bursting to life from him, forming one by one, were katanas emitting thin ribbons of smoke and ether. The more he signed, the more they would appear until they formed a solid ring around him, drowning out the sight of him. Yet still he continued, his body tightening and his eyes narrowing. All one-hundred signs... he had no idea how long he'd spent simply training on the signals alone...

But he was done. His hands came together and his eyes narrowed, pupils narrowing to slits. The blades took to the air, all trained on the fallen bulette. Then with every sweep of his hands, a blade came crashing down into the form. First three, then four, then five, and finally the eight, stirring the air with the sheer force of them as they all struck and dissipated until there was nothing left.

Short of breath, mostly spent, Yuki'to's eyes found their focus again. Is... is it done...?

With Noah's potions and Yuki'to's mudras, there was little the bulette could do against the ninja's finishing move. The alchemist had his knife and another vial at the ready, but upon seeing the rapid flash of hand signs, he knew his companion had at least one more trick up his sleeve. He stands at the ready, taking a few paces backwards to pull himself out of the crossfire.

While unnecessary, the man's glad he gave the ninja some space. Numerous swords appear from thin air, running the shark through from several different angles. It gives a loud death cry as it finally reaches its limits, its movements slowing and slowing until they've stopped completely.

He's dead, Jim.

With the battle finally over, Noah sheathes his blade and pockets the vial, folding his arms as if appraising Yuki'to's work, the careful eyes of a man who's seen many battles seeing yet another come to a close, another enemy dead at his feet. "...I think you got 'em. Nice work."

He eventually caught up with his success, and sheathed his weapons. It wasn't often that he got to use that technique, and he was certain he wouldn't find another chance for some time.

Yuki'to looked back at Noah with a nod and a relieved smile, hands dusting against one another. That meant the job was done and these people would be safe. There was just the matter of reporting the success.

However, as he looked back at what remained of the bulette, he wondered if they wanted just word of mouth. Or...

Noah seems to share that thought with the ninja, as the alchemist finds himself inspecting the dead bulette, taking particular in its fin. A hand rests on the creature's head as he bows his own, paying his respects to the fallen shark. This ends rather quickly, as his hand moves towards the fin to give it a little shake. Yeah, that's not coming off that easily.

"This'll be enough proof." He gestures over to Yuki'to. "Ever carved up an animal before?" He's pretty sure this isn't the ninja's first time doing that, but it doesn't hurt to be sure. Quick pray the RNG gives you the rare carve

He looked up, and wondered why he hadn't thought of that sooner. The fin would be perfect, and nothing anyone would be able to fake this far inland. With the question he grabbed a dagger hilt and listened to the blade sing as it dragged against its sheath.

Yuki'to nodded, and set to work. The blade sank into flesh and fat, working its way around the fin to keep the entire thing intact. If the fin wouldn't convince, the shred of hide around it bearing the color of the bulette would. He'd just have to make a note to get his hands on a whetstone later, considering this thing was all plates and sandpaper.

With a neat pull, he removed the thing entirely, leaving an easy opening for carrion feeders that would have otherwise passed the corpse and its armored hide by. Always leave something behind, for it is a creature of the land... others have to eat, too.
